In Boston City Council District 1, StreetsPAC Mass endorses Lydia Edwards to succeed retiring councilor Sal LaMattina. The Boston Globe awarded Lydia its Bostonian of the Year in 2015 and recognized her again as a 2017 “Game Changer” for her recent work as Deputy Director of the city’s Office of Housing Stability. As a public interest attorney, she was the driving force in passing statewide legislation protecting women workers in just one session; a feat almost never realized by most legislators. We especially liked Lydia’s response to the age-friendly walking question on the Vision Zero Coalition’s candidate questionnaire, and we quote: “As a board member of the Boston Center for Independent Living, I am committed to ensuring Boston is accessible for all ages, all abilities and all people. Distance between home and transit, funding to make accessible home modifications, street design that provides ample sidewalk space, safe crosswalks and clear signals are all critical.” We agree with Lydia that a Boston in which our streets truly serve everyone should be everyone’s goal.
